Prior to his election as mayor, McCann served as president of City Council for two years. In the 1980s, he served on the municipal park board of directors and the planning commission, and was a member of the Charter Review Committee in the 2000s. Mayor McCann spends much of his time looking for ways to serve the community as effectively as possible, reduce harassment and rot, and create an environment conducive to economic development. And more recently, he has started working on housing options and neighborhood revitalization. The supervisory body is composed of the mayor, the municipal administrator, the legal director and the financial director, chaired by the mayor. The council oversees financial and administrative matters affecting the city and works closely with the city council. Resolutions shall be adopted by a majority of all members. Minutes of meetings of the Chamber shall be kept and made available to the public. Mayor McCann`s goal is to strengthen all aspects of the Defiance community. Mike McCann, originally from Defiance, was elected mayor of the city of Defiance in November 2015. McCann, who graduated from Defiance High School in 1975, had been with ServiceMaster by McCann since 1969, when his parents Dick and Marilyn McCann bought the company. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Toledo before being appointed Master of Service by McCann in 2005 and becoming President and CEO. Mayor McCann and his wife Laurie have five children and twelve grandchildren.

The former “Ask the Mayor” TV show starring Mayor Mike McCann Ryan lives in the town of Defiance with his two children who enjoy hiking community trails and playing in many of our beautiful parks. John Lehner was appointed Chief Financial Officer of the City of Defiance in 2009. He has more than 30 years of experience in the field of public finance. John joined Defiance after serving as Chief Financial Officer for Talbot County, Maryland and Clyde, Ohio. He also had experience as a budget analyst for the state of Rhode Island. He was awarded the Purple Heart for the injuries he sustained during the Battle of Marjah. Upon his return home, Ryan earned his bachelor`s degree from Defiance College. Ryan Mack was appointed a director of the City of Defiance in 2022. Prior to his appointment, he was one of the elected commissioners of Defiance County for 7 years. During his tenure as commissioner, he managed the county`s finances and oversaw various departments and organizations in the county. Prior to that, he gained several years of professional experience as a U.S. Congressman in northwest Ohio. The Finance Department of the City of Defiance has received recognition from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for its verified degrees, which John has earned each year as Director of Finance. The Treasury Department has also received the Ohio Auditor of State Award with distinction several times over the years.

This award recognizes the finance department`s efforts as its own audit, which is only awarded to about 3 to 5 percent of the 5,900 companies audited by the Ohio auditor. Thus, the city of defiance belongs to a very select group of cities and schools. Sean O`Donnell was appointed Director of Municipal Law by Mayor Mike McCann on January 1, 2018. Sean graduated magna laude from Hillsdale College in 2007 and received his law degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. in 2010. Prior to his appointment, Sean worked in private practice in Defiance and served as Chair of the City`s Planning Commission. Sean is a member of the local Knights of Columbus council and president of the Rotary Defiance Club. Sean and his wife Joy live in Defiance with their three children Caroline, Lucy and Peter.
