Legal Donations

Over the years, private and in-kind donations have made Legal Aid Works® a day-to-day operation possible. We greatly appreciate the generosity of individuals and organizations in the communities we serve. The IRS allows tax deductions for certain donations. You may be able to claim a deduction from your federal taxes if you made a donation to a 501(c)3 organization. To deduct donations, you must attach your tax form as Appendix A. With the proper documentation, you can claim vehicle or monetary donations. If you want to deduct a gift in kind, you must also complete Form 8283. To claim deductions, it is important to keep a record of your donations to charities. You may not need to send these documents with your tax returns, but they can be kept with your other tax records. The amount of money you can deduct from your taxes may not match the total amount of your donations. Federal law prohibits contributions, donations, expenditures (including independent expenses) and disbursements requested, directed, received or made, directly or indirectly, by or by foreigners in connection with federal, state or local elections. Pro bono and monetary donations are tax deductible under federal law. In addition, annual cash and in-kind donations such as pro bono services, office space, and donations of office equipment of $1,000 or more may entitle the donor to a 65% income tax credit on government taxes. Pro bono attorney representation is estimated at $125 per hour for Crown income tax credit purposes. Individual personal monetary donations between $500 and a maximum of $125,000 may also qualify for a 65% tax credit on an individual`s income tax.
