Is Business Haram

Can a Muslim become a lawyer or work? As long as Muslim lawyers do not interfere in Haram activities to further their careers, they are allowed to work as lawyers. According to most Mujtahidin, it is haram to obtain a loan from a non-Muslim bank on condition of paying interest. It is haram to demand interest from a Muslim in a loan. As for the collection of interest from a non-Muslim, most contemporary mujtahidin have allowed it.8 According to the majority of our mujtahids, it is permissible to demand interest between father and children and between husband and wife. I work in a halal marketing company. As I am the only Muslim in the industry, I decided to make a list of Haram companies so that we can stay away from these companies. The most obvious ones are well known. Gambling, financial institutions offering interest, non-halal food, restaurants serving alcohol. But I`m afraid I`ll miss out on some companies, so please, if the siblings can think of something else, let me know. Charity in this sense does not only mean making payments of money to the needy and poor, but charity is also engaging in climate change by trying to minimize waste and introduce a zero waste business model. Charity also includes protecting the ocean and the blue economy, protecting the green economy, and ultimately harnessing a business model that targets the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Other items of Ayn Naji (such as human or animal feces, urine, blood, semen) may be legitimate commercial goods, provided there is fair use for them. For example, manure from farm animals can be used as manure; animal blood intended for use as a dye, etc.; Blood from people for transfusion to a patient who needs it.

A company should only act what is legal. Items such as alcohol, tobacco, pork, pornographic material and services, and interest-based debts should not be traded. Data showing the damage caused by each individual to themselves, society, the economy and taxpayers is readily available. Any company that has the following three conditions is considered riba and haram: However, such investments could become haram for secondary reasons: when you invest in a company that trades a haram commodity, such as a brewery or casino. The best option for a Muslim investing in mutual funds would be “ethical funds,” as these funds do not deal with alcohol, tobacco, gambling or products harmful to the environment.23 Islam has a strong policy of honesty and maintaining integrity in all areas of life. However, the focus is on maintaining honesty and integrity in business, as the stakes are higher. Similarly, a Muslim artist, calligrapher, designer, web designer, printer or publisher is not allowed to prepare and advertise an advertisement for intoxicating drinks. That would be promoting immorality, and it is not allowed, even if this Muslim will lose the future business of these customers. The seriousness of this issue from a Shia perspective is clear from the story of Safwan al-Jammal, a companion of the sixth and seventh Shia imams. Safwan owned a camel rental (similar to the car rental of our time) and thus his title “al-Jammal” of Jamal, camel. He once rented his camels to Harun ar-Rashid, the Abbasid caliph considered a tyrant by the Shiites.

It is haram to create horoscopes and predict people`s future by looking at the movement or orientation of the stars. This is obviously different from astronomy, which is a proven science. It is also haram to believe in astrology and palmistry. A Muslim should trust the intelligence Allah has given him, work hard and rely on divine grace (tawfiq) to succeed. Safwan al-Jammal went to sell his rental business to someone else.25 In cases where such a transaction is allowed, the goods and price cannot be of the same goods, otherwise he is considered riba and he is haram. ACCEPTABLE COMPANIES Industrial sectors that generally do not manufacture or market banned products are considered halal and acceptable to Muslim investors. Some classic examples of suitable industries are: • Chemical manufacturing • Computer computers and software • Energy • Telecommunications • Textiles • Transport UNACCEPTABLE BUSINESSES Islamic law identifies business activities as haram if they generate profits in an unacceptable manner. Haram`s activities include the manufacture or marketing of any of these products: • Alcohol • Gambling or gambling activities • Conventional financial services • Pork and pork products • Pornography For example, the sale of 100 kg of wheat for every 110 kg of wheat would be considered riba and haram, whether the payment is made locally or deterred. It is haram to work for a company that produces such drinks, in any form of work: driver, worker, accountant, guard, typist, etc. God says, “O you who have believed, do not consume unjustly the wealth of others, but only by mutual consent.” [Quran 4:29] A basic rule of Islamic affairs is good treatment and timely payment to employees.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Give the worker his wages before his sweat dries.” [Ibn Majah] In another statement, the Prophet said, “Whoever employs someone to work for him must fix his salary in advance.” [Musannaf `Abdur-Razzaq] Muslims are not allowed to buy intoxicating drinks for their customers during business lunches or dinners. “Hoarding” means storing a requested item in the hope that its price will increase. It is haram to accumulate ordinary food, which is scarcely available and in high demand. The Prophet Muhammad (saas) said, “No one accumulates food except the sinner.” 4 In an Islamic system, the government has the right to force such a trader to sell food at fair market value. According to some Shia scholars, it is also recommended not to take on board non-food items, which are considered a vital necessity for the people. Bernard Lietaer, a well-known professor of economics and former banker, comments on the current interest-based economic system as follows: But money was not created by God. We have forgotten that this is a system designed by humans. And I believe that this conception, which goes back centuries, is the root of most of the problems of our society. Working in banks or similar financial institutions: The activities of a bank are divided into two parts: Halal and Haram. Working in areas where interest is involved is haram. The merit one receives from such work is haram. Working in areas where there is no interest is halal.

According to Ayatullah Sistani, this decision is only relevant for Muslim banks and customers. Therefore, if the bank where you work is a non-Muslim bank and/or if the customers are non-Muslims, it is permissible to deal with them as a bank employee; and the income from this work is halal.22 Islam has given advice for every part of life. Each guide has an underlying utility and moral value. Business is no exception. Islam gives us a whole framework to conduct our affairs in a just, equitable and ethical manner. These teachings are not only for Muslims, anyone who believes in fair trade and moral values is encouraged to adhere to and promote these principles. It is haram to process intoxicating liquors in any form: sell, buy, use as rent or payment for work, etc. Answer: Lottery sales are haram.

However, working as a cashier in a supermarket is not haram, even if it is haram to sell lottery tickets. (The implication is that even if the cashier`s job is legitimate, but the portion of the salary that represents the percentage of work in the sale of lottery tickets is not considered legitimate.) The manufacture or trade of objects, tools or machinery used exclusively for Haram purposes is strictly prohibited. For example: slot machine, idols, etc. Similarly, a Muslim contractor is prohibited from building a place of worship for non-Muslims in a non-Muslim country. Any trade, enterprise or profession involving aiding i`anatu `z-zalama to the oppressors is forbidden and is considered one of the main sins of Islam. The Qur`an says: However, if the deferred price increase is negotiated during the transaction itself, then it is riba and inadmissible. For example, if the merchant says that this item is from $100, but the customer says he cannot pay now, he can only pay after one year; And the merchant then suggests that the deferred payment will be $125 – that`s Riba and Haram. In addition, this only applies to items that are not sold by weight; Otherwise, it is considered a RIBA and is not allowed. However, it is not a problem to deal with dual or multi-purpose machines that involve haram purposes, but are not used exclusively for things such as radio, television, etc. Therefore, the sale of arms, ammunition or repressive apparatuses to an oppressive government (non-Muslim or Muslim) is absolutely haram.

Similarly, work for an unjust and oppressive government in the departments used to oppress the people is haram for Ahlu `1-bayt supporters. Therefore, Muslims who wish to join law enforcement should seriously consider their country`s system or institution before deciding to join. The question they should ask themselves is: Will I become an instrument of oppression of the unjust government, or will I be a public servant who serves the people in the true sense of the word? If the answer to the first part of the question is yes, then do not pursue this career; If the answer to the second part of the question is yes, you can accept it.
