Law students who become commissioners in one of the service branches are appointed lawyers. Coast Guard and Marine Corps judge advocates may apply for non-legal assignments after their first assignment. Work in almost every practical area of the JAG Corps as a second-year law student. Support in real criminal and civil cases by conducting legal research, writing briefs, participating in investigations and interviewing witnesses. They advise Army commanders to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements under U.S. and military law. His areas of expertise include government ethics, administrative investigations, environmental law, privacy law, and freedom of information law, as well as the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), a military law enacted by Congress. Of the five branches, the Air Force and Army currently offer limited opportunities for funded legal training – for active military personnel or others interested in participating in their programs. From year to year, a select number of candidates are offered these opportunities based on available funds. When you are accepted into this highly selective program, your tuition, fees, and books are usually paid.

If you are on active duty, you will likely also receive your full regular salary, allowances and other benefits while you are in law school. The law school building and adjacent building were designed by Hugh Stubbins & Associates with Rawlings, Wilson and Fraher. An extension of the building, designed by Bohlin, Powell, Larkin, and Cywinski in collaboration with Johnson, Craven, and Gibson, was completed in 1991.[7] [7] The Legal Center and School (LCS) is headed by a Brigadier General serving as Commanding Officer, a Colonel serving as Chief of Staff, a Chief Warrant Officer serving as Chief Warrant Officer and a Command Sergeant Major serving as a Senior Advisor to the LCS and also as Commandant of the Non-Commissioned Officer Academy. The school is headed by a colonel who serves as dean, and the center is headed by a colonel who serves as director of the legal center. The school`s four academic departments are headed by lieutenant colonels. Faculty members are lieutenant colonels or majors who are licensed lawyers and are members of the Army Judge Advocate General`s Corps. Every academic department has at least one faculty member who is a judge in the Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps. Yes, through the Funded Legal Education Program (OOF), the Army covers law school fees for up to 25 active officers and non-commissioned officers each year.

Participants must attend an eligible school (usually a public school or a school that provides government tuition to military personnel) and serve in the JAG Corps upon completion. If you already have a law degree and are currently an active JAG agent, you may be eligible to repay student loans of up to $65,000. The Judge Advocate Officer Graduate Course is the school`s flagship course. [2] Accredited by the American Bar Association, the course prepares experienced military lawyers for supervisory and other positions of increased responsibility in their respective departments. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Master of Military Law. [10] Selection to participate in the course is a permanent change of station; Students do not participate in temporary service status. Each class is comprised of attorneys from the military, navy, air force, marine corps, and coast guard, as well as international military students and civilian attorneys from the military. International military students came from Egypt, Israel, Poland, Romania, South Korea, Bosnia and Herzegovina and other countries.

All students are licensed lawyers who typically have five to eight years of experience. If you have completed your second year of law school or have met two-thirds of your educational requirements, you can apply for direct employment as a JAG. The JAG Corps offers clerkship opportunities in the fall, spring and summer at air bases across the country.
