Applicants must demonstrate a complete knowledge of French in addition to the standard entry requirements. The French Law module in years 1 and 2 will give you the necessary skills during your year abroad in France. This program includes one year abroad (year 3) at our partner institution, Université Paris II Panthéon Assas. You must take into account the additional travel, accommodation and subsistence costs associated with this stay abroad. As a UCL law student, your modules will be taught through weekly lectures combined with a bi-weekly tutorial or seminars.
In lectures, seminars and exercises, you will have the opportunity to explore the principles of law and understand its role in regulating the relationship between the individual, the state and society. All of our programs are consistent with the QAA Subject Reference Statement for Law and include the topics “Fundamentals of Legal Knowledge” as well as skills associated with legal work such as legal research. Each week of Years 1 and 2 of the program, students have at least four two-hour lectures and two small group tutorials per week from semesters 1 and 2.
In addition to formal learning and teaching events such as lectures, seminars, and tutorials, you must attend independent private study. Although everyone is different, we expect you to dedicate about 30 hours of private lessons per week. This may take more weeks. Many students organize informal study groups and find collaboration with colleagues useful. Through discussions and debates with your classmates and tutors, written assignments and presentations, you will develop your ability to communicate clearly and effectively, sharpen your reasoning skills and gain the technical expertise needed to solve legal problems. Successful access to the higher education diploma, with a minimum of 36 credits in Distinction and 9 credits in merit, all level 3. The case studies cover topics such as climate change, homelessness, the global financial crisis, fake news and falsehoods, and the parental home. You will be encouraged to reflect deeply on the role of lawyers and the law in dealing with important social issues, and to introduce important legal ideas and concepts, as well as important legal skills.
